Palliative care in
general and especially for children is a new approach in Russia. Considering the fact
that we often invite for cooperation people without medical knowledge, we find it
reasonable to begin with most common definitions.
Palliative care is an interdisciplinary approach to care offered to a patient. The main goal
of such approach is not just treatment of the main disease but general improvement of quality
of patient’s life. and lives of his or her loved ones. This kind of care can be offered together
with any other type of therapy as soon as the disease is diagnosed. In case of incurable diseases
palliative care , which includes management of pain and other symptoms, becomes the only type of
care available to patient and his or her loved ones.
Apart from symptomatic treatment alternative and complementary therapies can be used.
Comprehensive care includes all types of therapy, social support, psychological, emotional and
spiritual support for a patient and his or her loved ones. Spiritual care offers culturally
sensitive service, based on cultural and religious peculiarities of a patient, also includes
bereavement support for the family after a patient’s death.
Palliative care for children has its own peculiarities. First of all it is a family centered care.
Nevertheless sometimes we help children from orphanages or from families where they are neglected.

hospice. But in any case palliative care is based on nursing provided by interdisciplinary team

circumstances. In order to make it as effective as possible we must carefully evaluate and manage
all resources available.
